It's Memorial Day weekend, Happy Happy to everyone and Thank you to those who serve and have served us so well. NYC is empty, well practically, during almost every major Holiday. Most people flock to their country houses (those people I don't really know) or people fly off to some exotic locale to lay on the beach (I don't really know those people either) but I usually stay here. I like the city when it's empty. I like being able to not have to knock down tourists to get to the park for my annual Memorial Day tanning in the the Sheep's Meadow. There's something great about Memorial Day weekend, it signifies that we are deep into Spring and that summer is just around the corner.
I didn't, and I rarely make plans for Memorial Day and sometimes I get pretty sad about that... but this year the plans just sort of formulated before my very eyes and that's when I knew; I think I can call NYC home now. I have enough friends here now that plans just sorta happen...I get invited to things and all of a sudden my weekend is full. It's a nice feeling being able to finally call this place home.
I had the best dinner with 2 couples last night. One of the persons in one of the couples is one of my best friends in the world, and she is now best friends with one of her exes and her exes new girlfriend. Kudos to these girls, they rock and they really care about each other. There was chocolate cake for dessert and I was going to refrain but as we all gathered in the living room, talking and joking around I noticed that the chocolate cake was symbolic of this new group of friends....we cut slices and passed them around just like a family.
I'm so happy to finally be home.
I hope wherever you are today, fighting for our Freedom in the war, or hanging out with your family or your urban family, that you take the time to pass around the chocolate cake and spend a little time being happy...at home.
Peace
One carrot. One radish. One tidbit of my life on a celery stick with peanut butter. It's all here. Enjoy!

Spring Fling
It's finally Spring here in the Big Apple! It seems like it took old man winter forever to get the hint to get outta town! As of late it's only started feeling like Spring and back home in Texas they are full on raging in summer temps already. Amazing how 1000 miles south it's over 100 degrees and we're stretching to hit 80 during the day.
Today 3 different people came into my office and commented on how hot it was. I had my windows open and was feeling JUST fine...I'm from Texas people, 80 degrees is nothing. Besides; It's Spring!
Last night I went to the store to get some dinner and 3 sailors passed me (It's fleet week in NYC right now) and whistled. Whistled! It was awesome! I felt like Marilyn Monroe in the 50's! I wish I had on that white dress, that would have been very cool. Because, It's Spring!
It's Memorial Day weekend this weekend and everyone will get OUT of the city, and I will stay in. I love the city when it's quiet and empty. I plan on relaxing and then Saturday I'll head out to Brooklyn to spend the day with a friend, we've got a dinner to go to that night followed by my attending a Birthday party for one of my very cool Improv friends. Busy Saturday. Sunday I think I'll hang out in the sheep's meadow or take the ferry over to Governor's Island and read a book...Monday, BBQ at a friends house in Queens (with veg friendly options cause she's cool like that). All because it's Spring!
I hope you, wherever you are, are Spring Flinging, and having fun too! Unless you're in Texas...then you better reapply that sunscreen cause summer's here!
Happy Spring to you!

Spring Awakening
So yeah yeah yeah, I know I know. I've been absentia again. I've been neglecting this blog for work, grad school, love, life, and Twitter. (Shameless plug: You can follow me on Twitter at veggygal@gmail.com ) Now I know that those are NOT really great excuses for neglecting my faithful blog fans but I promise you, I will not let you down again. So here I am. Let's get started...
A couple of days ago a man sat down on the bus next to me reciting Shakespeare beautifully. For most people that might have been a problem, but for me, I happen to LOVE the Bard and listened enthusiastically at an older man's version of King Lear. When he paused, I asked, c'mon, I had too, what gives? He said he used to be an actor and he can't start any day without reciting Shakespeare for fear of getting Alzheimer's. Then he chuckled. I told him that I'd done some Shakespeare acting myself in the past and that he was probably one of the better reciters I'd ever heard. To that he smiled and bid me adieu, getting off the bus in complete fanfare, still reciting, at 79th and Lexington.
I loved that bus ride. To be or not to be...that is the question.
I hope you choose "to be" alive in your world today too.
Peace.

Out with the old, and in with the new.
I will admit it. I am a very bad blogger. I don't think that I'm a bad blog writer, just a bad blogger. I write in this blog when the mood strikes me and hope that someone reads it. Not for hope that I have something profound to say but for the hope that I can entertain someone, somewhere, besides myself. (insert big lol here)
So here I am, back again, after coming across my blog when I was cleaning my bookmarks folder out. I looked through some of my older posts and laughed. Blogging does put your entire world out there for the world to see, and read and so for that, I'll keep this short because I gotta whole lotta life happening here but unfortunately you're only going to get to see a tidbit of it. (insert a Thank God here)
So, it's 2011. I'm feeling a need to write, especially about my "whole lotta life", let's hope you're feeling the need to read about that life.
I'll see ya round kid (insert a yep, tomorrow, cause you need to keep up to date with this blog since you started it...kid.)

Oops, I did it again.
I'm not a fan of Britney Spears but it's the only thing I could think of to "title" my absence from this blog. In my defense, I did state that I'd attempt to keep up with posting as much as I could. Sometimes I wonder if anyone is even reading this or actually looking at my words to offer some sort of wisdom or maybe a tiny bit of relief from their mundane day or a little bit of light in their dark world--ok I know THAT was a bit of a stretch considering that I don't even keep up with this blog all that much(that doesn't mean I don't want too though). Could you imagine if what I posted here actually meant that someone's day was brightened and that they looked forward to reading my thoughts so much that it actually kept them from committing some awful act of senselessness? If that were the case, then believe, from the bottom of my heart, I'd post every single day. But since that's not the case, I suppose I'll aim for weekly, for now, maybe if I'm inspired in the New Year, then 2x a week or so. For now, my apologies.
And now for an update: I did turn 40. I feel great, I hear that I look great, it's great. I love it. I could not be happier than to have been given what I'm calling, "Poetic License", to make quick decisions that might have been difficult for me in the past and to live my life, finally, just for me. You can't possibly know how good that feels, when the universe just say's, "Go for it girl! You're 40 now, you don't need an excuse, a reason, or a justification, it's all good, this is the next chapter of your life, welcome aboard!" Well, you might know, if you're in the same boat as me. And for the record, I like this boat. I never want to get off.
Here's what I think; Enjoy the moment that you're in RIGHT NOW. And, stick with me here, I'm totally going to get better at this. ;)

Chapter 2
If you know me then you'll know that I have a BIG Birthday coming up this weekend, and if you don't, I'll still take your well wishes, I can use all that I can get! As the day approaches I suppose it's only natural to think about your life and what you've accomplished, or failed at, what you have seen, and have yet to see, friends you've made, and those you've yet to. I've noticed that the days pass by fast sometimes but suddenly at the age that I'm about to turn (I'll let you guess what that is) the moments seem slower, life seems more valuable to me, and I'm finally feeling like I'm living, and I'm happier than I've ever been. So, I say bring on Chapter 2, I'm ready, I'm able, and I'm willing to really cherish the new memories that I'm about to make as I carry with me the best of the older ones.
I'll leave you with my favorite poem about life from John Keats. I'll be back next week. Have a wonderful weekend!
Happy life, love and days. :)
The Human Seasons
by John Keats
Four Seasons fill the measure of the year;
There are four seasons in the mind of man:
He has his lusty Spring, when fancy clear
Takes in all beauty with an easy span:
He has his Summer, when luxuriously
Spring's honeyed cud of youthful thought he loves
To ruminate, and by such dreaming high
Is nearest unto Heaven: quiet coves
His soul has in its Autumn, when his wings
He furleth close; contented so to look
On mists in idleness—to let fair things
Pass by unheeded as a threshold brook:—
He has his Winter too of pale misfeature,
Or else he would forego his mortal nature.

How many train wrecks do we need to see before we lose touch?
Jack Johnson finishes that lyric with "Where did all the good people go?"
A couple of weeks ago there was a huge wind storm on Madison Ave, no, I'm not lying, really, it was like being back in Texas in the middle of a Tornado, for real I was coming back from my power walk at lunch around the reservoir (I know who you are that are laughing at me calling myself a power walker just know that lol) and I turned the corner onto Madison to be literally almost knocked down by this huge gush of wind! It was so strong in fact that the street signs were whirling like in the Wizard of Oz movie, the trees were swaying in the medians and papers were flying every where. I looked down the ways a bit and I saw a poor lady with a toddler, a huge stroller and some bags--before I knew it the stroller was going one way with the toddler still holding on to it, his backpack had been literally blown off his little back, the bags were going the other way.. so I ran as fast as I possibly could against this ferocious wind and grabbed the toddler with one hand and the stroller with the other while the woman ran after her bags--she looked over at me and literally almost began to cry--when she finally got herself together she said to me "Oh my goodness, thank God for you! I would have never been able to make it if you wouldn't have helped me out!" The toddler was still crying so I was trying to help calm him down, I helped her put her bags into the stroller (mind you she was probably 5ft tall and 100 lbs soaking wet) and when I stood up she immediately jumped to hug me. I accepted the hug, and then I said "No worries, I'm glad I could help." Now, I'm in NO way a Saint, I don't profess to be one, claim to be one or attempt to be one, but I DO consider myself one of "the good people" that Jack's asking about.
The sad part of that story is that at least 5 people walked right around her before I even got to her.
So here's what I think; Don't be one of those 5 people. I think that most of us are actually good people, we're just busy and sometimes we lose focus on what's important in life. Being kind and humane shouldn't be things that have to be taught, they should be things that are innate in us...how much better would this world be if they were? Can we re-learn how to be? I think so.
Night good people ;)
